Launched in 1996, the 273′ x 52′ US Navy-owned R/V Roger Revelle spends an average of 250 days a year at sea—and that time has taken its toll. It’s currently at Vigor shipyards in Portland, Oregon, going through a year-long, $52 million refit to enhance its research and operations systems and extend its working life. As part of the upgrade, it’s receiving high-performance engine room ventilation equipment from Delta “T” Systems, the global leader in military, commercial and recreational marine airflow.
Delta “T” Systems custom fabricated three oversized aluminum moisture eliminators for the R/V Roger Revelle and is supplying four 44″ Witt & Sohn vane axial fans, two intakes rated at 50,000 cfm and two exhausts capable of producing 37,000 cfm.
The engineered system is managed by a Delta “T” Systems P/T6 Engine Room Ventilation Controller. It automatically controls and synchronizes the AC-powered engine room intake and exhaust fans of the R/V Roger Revelle to deliver optimal airflow. This will maintain the correct pressure and temperature its new diesel engines require for peak performance and efficiency. Additionally, improved airflow provides for crew comfort and safety. The ventilation equipment is being installed by Seattle-based Macdonald-Miller.
The 3,180 GRT Roger Revelle is a global-class auxiliary general-purpose research vessel with a 15,000 nm range. The vessel is tasked with conducting oceanic, atmospheric and surface research using a state-of-the-art hydrographic Doppler sonar system and other advanced sensing systems. Its sistership, the R/V Atlantis, is scheduled for its mid-life refit in 2020; Delta “T” Systems is currently quoting the engineered ventilation system for the project.
Delta “T” Systems’ pioneering marine ventilation equipment and engineered systems have been installed in over 18,000 military, commercial and recreational vessels worldwide. Its fire dampers, axial and duct fans, blowers, louvers, moisture eliminators, weather closures and controls are made in the USA and widely used in OEM, custom build and refit applications. The company is also the exclusive distributor for Dinak modular exhausts throughout North, Central and South America.
